Chapter 7

καὶ συνάγονται πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καί τινες τῶν γραμματέων ἐλθόντες ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων

Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus,

καὶ ἰδόντες τινὰς τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ὅτι κοιναῖς χερσίν τοῦτ’ ἔστιν ἀνίπτοις ἐσθίουσιν τοὺς ἄρτους

and they saw some of His disciples eating with hands that were defiled—that is, unwashed.

οἱ γὰρ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ πάντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐὰν μὴ πυγμῇ νίψωνται τὰς χεῖρας οὐκ ἐσθίουσιν κρατοῦντες τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων

Now in holding to the tradition of the elders, the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat until they wash their hands ceremonially.

καὶ ἀπ’ ἀγορᾶς ἐὰν μὴ βαπτίσωνται οὐκ ἐσθίουσιν καὶ ἄλλα πολλά ἐστιν ἃ παρέλαβον κρατεῖν βαπτισμοὺς ποτηρίων καὶ ξεστῶν καὶ χαλκίων

And on returning from the market, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions for them to observe, including the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and couches for dining.

καὶ ἐπερωτῶσιν αὐτὸν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς διὰ τί οὐ περιπατοῦσιν οἱ μαθηταί σου κατὰ τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων ἀλλὰ κοιναῖς χερσὶν ἐσθίουσιν τὸν ἄρτον

So the Pharisees and scribes questioned Jesus: “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders? Instead, they eat with defiled hands.”

ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὅτι καλῶς ἐπροφήτευσεν Ἠσαΐας περὶ ὑμῶν τῶν ὑποκριτῶν ὡς γέγραπται ὅτι οὗτος ὁ λαὸς τοῖς χείλεσίν με τιμᾷ ἡ δὲ καρδία αὐτῶν πόρρω ἀπέχει ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ

Jesus answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.

μάτην δὲ σέβονταί με διδάσκοντες διδασκαλίας ἐντάλματα ἀνθρώπων

They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men.’

ἀφέντες τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ κρατεῖτε τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν ἀνθρώπων

You have disregarded the commandment of God to keep the tradition of men. ”

καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς καλῶς ἀθετεῖτε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἵνα τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν τηρήσητε

He went on to say, “You neatly set aside the command of God to maintain your own tradition.

Μωϋσῆς γὰρ εἶπεν τίμα τὸν πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν μητέρα σου καί ὁ κακολογῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα θανάτῳ τελευτάτω

For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’

ὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε ἐὰν εἴπῃ ἄνθρωπος τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί κορβᾶν ὅ ἐστιν δῶρον ὃ ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῇς

But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is Corban’ (that is, a gift devoted to God),

οὐκέτι ἀφίετε αὐτὸν οὐδὲν ποιῆσαι τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί

he is no longer permitted to do anything for his father or mother.

ἀκυροῦντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ τῇ παραδόσει ὑμῶν ᾗ παρεδώκατε καὶ παρόμοια τοιαῦτα πολλὰ ποιεῖτε

Thus you nullify the word of God by the tradition you have handed down. And you do so in many such matters.”

καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος πάλιν τὸν ὄχλον ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς ἀκούσατέ μου πάντες καὶ σύνετε

Once again Jesus called the crowd to Him and said, “All of you, listen to Me and understand:

οὐδέν ἐστιν ἔξωθεν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς αὐτὸν ὃ δύναται κοινῶσαι αὐτόν ἀλλὰ τὰ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκπορευόμενά ἐστιν τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον

Nothing that enters a man from the outside can defile him; but the things that come out of a man, these are what defile him.”

Εἴ τις ἔχει ὦτα ἀκούειν ἀκουέτω

If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.]”

Some ancient manuscripts include verse 16.

καὶ ὅτε εἰσῆλθεν εἰς οἶκον ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ τὴν παραβολήν

After Jesus had left the crowd and gone into the house, His disciples inquired about the parable.

καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ ἔξωθεν εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸν ἄνθρωπον οὐ δύναται αὐτὸν κοινῶσαι

“Are you still so dull?” He asked. “Do you not understand? Nothing that enters a man from the outside can defile him,

ὅτι οὐκ εἰσπορεύεται αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν καρδίαν ἀλλ’ εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν καὶ εἰς τὸν ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκπορεύεται καθαρίζων πάντα τὰ βρώματα

because it does not enter his heart, but it goes into the stomach and then is eliminated.” (Thus all foods are clean.)

ἔλεγεν δὲ ὅτι τὸ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκπορευόμενον ἐκεῖνο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον

He continued: “What comes out of a man, that is what defiles him.

ἔσωθεν γὰρ ἐκ τῆς καρδίας τῶν ἀνθρώπων οἱ διαλογισμοὶ οἱ κακοὶ ἐκπορεύονται πορνεῖαι κλοπαί φόνοι

For from within the hearts of men come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,

μοιχεῖαι πλεονεξίαι πονηρίαι δόλος ἀσέλγεια ὀφθαλμὸς πονηρός βλασφημία ὑπερηφανία ἀφροσύνη

greed, wickedness, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness.

πάντα ταῦτα τὰ πονηρὰ ἔσωθεν ἐκπορεύεται καὶ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον

All these evils come from within, and these are what defile a man.”

ἐκεῖθεν δὲ ἀναστὰς ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὰ ὅρια Τύρου καὶ Σιδῶνος καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς οἰκίαν οὐδένα ἤθελεν γνῶναι καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνάσθη λαθεῖν

Jesus left that place and went to the region of Tyre. Not wanting anyone to know He was there, He entered a house, but was unable to escape their notice.

ἀλλ’ εὐθὺς ἀκούσασα γυνὴ περὶ αὐτοῦ ἧς εἶχεν τὸ θυγάτριον αὐτῆς πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον ἐλθοῦσα προσέπεσεν πρὸς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ

Instead, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit soon heard about Jesus, and she came and fell at His feet.

ἡ δὲ γυνὴ ἦν Ἑλληνίς Συροφοινίκισσα τῷ γένει καὶ ἠρώτα αὐτὸν ἵνα τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐκβάλῃ ἐκ τῆς θυγατρὸς αὐτῆς

Now she was a Greek woman of Syrophoenician origin, and she kept asking Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτῇ ἄφες πρῶτον χορτασθῆναι τὰ τέκνα οὐ γάρ ἐστιν καλόν λαβεῖν τὸν ἄρτον τῶν τέκνων καὶ τοῖς κυναρίοις βαλεῖν

“First let the children have their fill,” He said. “For it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

ἡ δὲ ἀπεκρίθη καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ ναί Κύριε καὶ τὰ κυνάρια ὑποκάτω τῆς τραπέζης ἐσθίουσιν ἀπὸ τῶν ψιχίων τῶν παιδίων

“Yes, Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ διὰ τοῦτον τὸν λόγον ὕπαγε ἐξελήλυθεν τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐκ τῆς θυγατρός σου

Then Jesus told her, “Because of this answer, you may go. The demon has left your daughter.”

καὶ ἀπελθοῦσα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς εὗρεν τὸ παιδίον βεβλημένον ἐπὶ τὴν κλίνην καὶ τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐξεληλυθός

And she went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone.

καὶ πάλιν ἐξελθὼν ἐκ τῶν ὁρίων Τύρου ἦλθεν διὰ Σιδῶνος εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ὁρίων Δεκαπόλεως

Then Jesus left the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.

καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτῷ κωφὸν καὶ μογιλάλον καὶ παρακαλοῦσιν αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιθῇ αὐτῷ τὴν χεῖρα

Some people brought to Him a man who was deaf and hardly able to speak, and they begged Jesus to place His hand on him.

καὶ ἀπολαβόμενος αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου κατ’ ἰδίαν ἔβαλεν τοὺς δακτύλους αὐτοῦ εἰς τὰ ὦτα αὐτοῦ καὶ πτύσας ἥψατο τῆς γλώσσης αὐτοῦ

So Jesus took him aside privately, away from the crowd, and put His fingers into the man’s ears. Then He spit and touched the man’s tongue.

καὶ ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἐστέναξεν καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ ἐφφαθά ὅ ἐστιν διανοίχθητι

And looking up to heaven, He sighed deeply and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means, “Be opened!”).

καὶ ἠνοίγησαν αὐτοῦ αἱ ἀκοαί καὶ ἐλύθη ὁ δεσμὸς τῆς γλώσσης αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐλάλει ὀρθῶς

Immediately the man’s ears were opened and his tongue was released, and he began to speak plainly.

καὶ διεστείλατο αὐτοῖς ἵνα μηδενὶ λέγωσιν ὅσον δὲ αὐτοῖς διεστέλλετο αὐτοὶ μᾶλλον περισσότερον ἐκήρυσσον

Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more He ordered them, the more widely they proclaimed it.

καὶ ὑπέρπερισσῶς ἐξεπλήσσοντο λέγοντες καλῶς πάντα πεποίηκεν καὶ τοὺς κωφοὺς ποιεῖ ἀκούειν καὶ ἀλάλους λαλεῖν

The people were utterly astonished and said, “He has done all things well! He makes even the deaf hear and the mute speak!”
